Welcome to coUMEya

                       About coUMEya

In Japan, fewer people wear kimono each year, and as a result, the opportunity to use beautiful obi is also declining. An obi is a traditional Japanese textile wrapped around the body when wearing a kimono, known for its vibrant colors and intricate designs.
At coUMEya, we carefully transform these precious obi into bags and belts, giving them new life in a form that suits today’s modern lifestyles. We design and sell simple obi bags that pair easily with Western clothing, all from Kawagoe—a charming town known for its traditional warehouses and where kimono still feel right at home.

Bring the elegance of authentic Japanese culture into your everyday life.

Each of our pieces is crafted from fabrics that once brought color and beauty to the daily lives of people in Japan. As lifestyles have changed, the opportunity to wear traditional kimono has become increasingly rare. Now, these exquisite obi—once full of life—are reborn, carrying with them a sense of mystery and the unique harmony of Japanese tradition and nature. We invite you to experience this beauty in your own hands.

It was a truly big challenge.
From February 1 to 26, 2025, we sold our obi bags at Kobikicho Plaza, located in the basement of Kabuki-za in Ginza. We were deeply moved and grateful to receive kind words such as “So beautiful!” from customers visiting from abroad. Thank you very much.

"coUMEya" designs and sells simple obi bags that pair well with Western clothing, based in Kawagoe—a town where traditional kimono still feel right at home.4o

It was started by Toko Fujishiro, a company employee living in Saitama City, a town located near Tokyo.

The project began in March 2022, inspired by the shock of learning that countless kimono and obi are discarded every year in Japan. It was sparked by a discovery: 100 fukuro obi sleeping in the wardrobe of her 102-year-old grandmother, a former geisha in Mukojima, Tokyo.

About the Founder: Toko Fujishiro

Profile
She was raised by her grandmother, a former geisha, in Kameido, Tokyo, until the second grade of elementary school.

After graduating from Keio University, she worked for a household goods manufacturer before joining a major mail-order company in Tokyo.

Deeply influenced by her grandmother, she developed a deep love for kimono, but could not ignore the overwhelming number of kimono and obi being discarded.

In March 2022, while working as a company employee, she launched "Coumeya" and began creating obi bags from unused obi stored in wardrobes, with the aim of contributing to the local community.

coUMEya's efforts to promote obi are spreading across Japan and around the world.

We hope to earn the trust of more people and grow our efforts into something that supports the local kimono and traditional culture. We kindly ask for your support.
